Three Blind Mice is a children's round in the form of a cannon dating from 1609. Four centuries later, our 'three little blind mice' of today have not fallen on deaf ears, for I quickly realized that these three individuals have as their main amusement taking music seriously.
Chamber jazz, pocket jazz: imagine, there's not even a piano or drums! And yet it works: this trio truly makes you believe there are at least four of them, because each member knows how to expand, increasing their space without encroaching on that of the other two. It's not easy to invest so much time and energy, but these guys are tough! And then there are the inventive arrangements; a quest for variety: changes in tempo, color, and key, frequent breaks, and the full potential of each instrument. Add to that the meticulous choice of repertoire, sometimes unusual: for example, transposing two famous stride piano solos (Echoes of Spring and Carolina Shout) into a trio where the piano is banished! But also, minimizing big band arrangements (Don't Be That Way, Four Brothers) which reinvent themselves without ever becoming simplistic. Variety also in the rhythms, from Latin to biguine (Humoresque, Panama, Three Blind Mice).
For those who like references and comparisons, we can mention the cool West Coast trio of Four Brothers composer Jimmy Giuffre (the one where we hear him on clarinet, with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Red Mitchell in 1959) and also the quartet of cornetist Ruby Braff with guitarist George Barnes (1973-75).
The trio of "Three Blind Mice": subtle, flexible... and useful music... for all "Cats" fond of all the beautiful surprises that jazz has not finished making us hear.
