Michel Pastre 5tet featuring Dany Doriz & Ken Peplowski – Tribute to Lionel Hampton

A key figure of the Swing Era, vibraphonist, drummer, and bandleader Lionel Hampton was one of the musicians I saw most often in concert since my beginnings in the 1970s. Like Armstrong, Basie, or Ellington, Hampton contributed to the early blossoming of my passion for jazz. He was a longtime collaborator of guitarist Charlie Christian in the various small swing groups of clarinetist Benny Goodman. Together, they wrote a part of the great history of Swing. Following on from our first album with this quintet, the CD Charlie Christian Project, Memories of You (winner of the 2015 Hot Club de France Prize), it was only natural that we chose to continue the adventure, this time focusing on the music of the great Lionel Hampton. To bring this project to life, we chose to invite two of the greatest musicians directly connected to this music: the fantastic American clarinetist Ken Peplowski, who began his career with Benny Goodman, and the renowned French vibraphonist Dany Doriz, who played with Lionel Hampton! The septet session lasted only one day, but the pleasure was immense and shared! I also extend my warmest thanks to the loyal and talented musicians who once again surround me in this project: Malo, Dave, Sébastien, Guillaume… Keep Swinging, guys!
